Trucks, Carts, and Pods, Oh My!

Labour Day long weekend is upon us, which means it’s time to squeeze the last bits of fun and frivolity out of summer. To accomplish this goal, I’m taking another road trip, this time to Portland! I’ve been trying to make it down to Oregon all summer and a stroke of serendipity (and two accommodating girlfriends who are letting me tag along with them) means I’m hopping on a bus early Saturday morning and heading to the land of the (tax) free! Bread with Jam

22 Aug Figs for Days Feature

My grandpa was a sweet man with a sweet tooth. This trait runs down all the branches of his family tree. When any of his seven children and eighteen grandchildren (me included) reach for something sugary after a meal, they know why.

When there was no dessert (and there often wasn’t), grandpa broke out the bread and jam.

You know why?

Because (with apologies to my celiac and gluten-intolerant friends) a soft slice of bread smeared with sweet jam makes your day look a little bit brighter and your troubles feel a little bit lighter. It is simply comfort food.

Sometimes you just need to go to the beach

It’s another perfect summer weekend in Vancouver and, despite neglecting housework, homework, and this blog all week, I decided Saturday had to be a beach day. Not one to shirk my responsibilities entirely, I did spend a couple (agonizing) hours indoors working on some homework. My reward was a glorious afternoon lazing in the sun at Jericho beach. I had my book, a blanket, some salsa and home-made guacamole for snacking, and nowhere to be.

Road Trip!

In my mind, it isn’t officially summer unless you (a) go camping or (b) take a road trip. I’m still not sure whether I’ll get out camping this year, but  the amount of “win” in my summer is going to increase exponentially when I drive to Kelowna to visit friends this weekend. Continue reading
